Seattle Dentist Dr. Thomas Roberts made his first trip to Nepal in 2001. Volunteering in a dental clinic led to a partnership in financing the construction of the Pema Ts’al Sakya Monastic Institute, as well as a medical/dental facility in Pokhara.
A nonprofit project, Pema Ts’al Sakya Monastic Institute provides education to the ethnically Tibetan people of Mustang. The project strives to improve the well-being and living conditions of the people in this region through education and an expanded sense of wholeness. Indian and Nepalese refugees are also included in the scope of this project.
The monastery makes it possible for children to receive a higher level of education, which prepares them for their future as leaders of the new generation with a fusion of traditional monastic training and modern education.
Dr. Roberts became the main sponsor of the project in 2003. During his annual visits, Dr. Roberts is able to teach proper oral hygiene and offer treatment for severe tooth decay to the students and their families.
